In San Luis Acatlan is the Coordinating Committee of the Community Authority, which brings together the elected authorities for the uses and customs of more than 60 indigenous settlements of the coast and part of la Montaa Chica de Guerrero.

This coordinating committee is also the place where orders and regulations are given to the Community Police, which is a grouping of peasants that provides its services free of charge, and is elected by the assemblies of their communities in order to offer this security work. Achieving the rank of commander requires 3 years of collaboration, for police class a year, and for volunteers only 15 days, during which time passes the “jail” or prisoner caravan which carries the offenders, touring all the communities in order to carry out community work and complete the punishment that the assembly has assigned to the prisoner.

This Community Police has existed for scarcely 11 years, and for most of this time it had to face the delinquency and insecurity of its towns which had been abandoned by their state governments, and created rural militias after losing trust in a government that declared them outside of the law despite the great results that they have achieved.

This zone is an example of the autonomy project that the indigenous towns look for and construct. This zone is also considered to be the poorest region of Mexico, having more infant mortality due to inadequate nutrition and a lack of medical attention.

The Community Police brings together hundreds of men that participate in providing security to the communities, where prior to the existence of the Community Police there was a high index of assault, aggression, and rape.
